Meet the Maker

A man with a beard and tattoos is oiling a wooden fox sculpture with a foam brush. The sculpture appears to be an artistic piece made of polished wood, resting on a white surface.

I'm Michael Taylor, founder and maker behind Material Theory.

My work is built around a simple belief: wood is more than a material. Every species has its own character, from the warmth of cherry and the depth of walnut to the striking natural colors of exotic hardwoods.

I create handcrafted wooden artwork using carefully selected hardwoods, with each piece shaped, fitted, and finished individually. Rather than relying on stains to create color, I let the wood's natural tones and grain become part of the design.

No two pieces are exactly alike. Every creation is an opportunity to turn an idea into something distinctive, tangible, and made to last.

My Approach

For me, woodworking is about finding the balance between artistic vision and the natural character of the material.

Every piece begins with a design, but the wood itself plays an important role in how that design comes to life. I carefully consider grain direction, color, texture, and the relationship between individual pieces to create depth, movement, and expression.

From the first cut to the final finish, each step is completed by hand. It's a process that demands patience and precision, but it's also what makes every finished piece unique.

Let’s Create Something Together

Whether you’re drawn to an existing piece or have and idea for something entirely your own, I’d love to help bring that vision to life.

Every creation begins with a conversation. Together, we can explore your ideas and create something personal, thoughtfully designed, and crafted to stand apart.
